Rare Finds: The Most Valuable Vinyl Records Ever Sold
Share
Vinyl records aren't just sonic relics of the past; they are also collectible treasures. Over the years, certain records have fetched astronomical prices at auctions due to their rarity, historical importance, or unique quirks. While Vinyl Legend has seen its share of incredible vinyl gems, the world of rare records goes beyond our doors. Here are some of the most valuable vinyl records ever sold.
1. The Beatles - "The White Album" (No. 0000001)While every Beatles enthusiast knows the "The White Album", the very first pressing (bearing the serial number 0000001) is the most coveted. Owned by Ringo Starr himself, it was sold at an auction for a staggering $790,000 in 2015. Legend has it that Vinyl Legend once had a copy bearing a serial number below 0000010 – not quite as legendary as Ringo's, but close!
2. Elvis Presley - "My Happiness"This acetate recording was Elvis's first-ever recording from 1953, given as a gift to his mother. Jack White, a modern vinyl enthusiast and musician, purchased it for $300,000. It’s said to be the inception of Elvis’s monumental career. We at Vinyl Legend can only dream of stumbling upon such a foundational piece of rock 'n' roll history.
3. The Beatles - "Please Please Me" (Black and Gold Label)The first-ever Beatles album had a limited initial release with a black and gold Parlophone label, before switching to the well-known black and yellow. A mint condition copy of this variant can command over $50,000.
4. Bob Dylan - "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (Withdrawn Tracks)A few tracks were replaced last minute on this Bob Dylan classic, but a few copies with the original tracklist slipped out. One of these rarities fetched around $35,000. While Vinyl Legend hasn’t had this exact rarity, we've seen several early Dylan pressings pass through our hands.
5. The Rolling Stones - "Street Fighting Man" (Original Cover)Originally released with a controversial cover depicting police brutality, it was swiftly withdrawn and replaced. A copy with the original cover can be worth upwards of $17,000.
6. The Sex Pistols - "God Save the Queen" (A&M Records)Before being released on Virgin, The Sex Pistols were briefly signed to A&M Records. A few pressings of "God Save the Queen" under this label exist and are valued at around $20,000. While this specific pressing has eluded Vinyl Legend's grasp, we remain hopeful!
The world of vinyl collecting is filled with tales of rare finds,
unexpected treasures, and staggering price tags. It's a testament to the lasting legacy of vinyl and the stories each record can tell. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting out, always remember: the next rare find could be just around the corner, maybe even at Vinyl Legend.
